Devotion and prayers to Saint Clare of Assisi for graces

Assisi, around 1193 - Assisi, 11 August 1253

Born into a wealthy noble family of Assisi, daughter of Count Favarone di Offreduccio degli Scifi and Ortolana, Chiara soon showed an independent character, refusing the marriage chosen for her by the family. Fascinated by the preaching of Francis of Assisi, on the night of Palm Sunday, when she was about 18, she fled from a side door of her father's house to join Francis and the first friars minor at the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, already since then commonly known as the Porziuncola. Here Francesco cut her hair and made her wear a habit; then he took her to the Benedictine monastery of San Paolo delle Badesse near Bastia Umbra, and then sought shelter for her at the monastery of Sant'Angelo di Panzo, on the slopes of Subasio. Finally Chiara took up residence in the small building annexed to the church of San Damiano, which had been restored by Francesco, under the dependence of Bishop Guido. Fascinated by the preaching and example of Francis, Chiara wanted to give life to a family of poor cloistered, immersed in prayer for herself and for others: the Poor Clares. He died in San Damiano, outside the walls of Assisi, on 11 August 1253, at the age of sixty.

PRAYER TO SANTA CHIARA

O Clare, who with the light of your evangelical life illuminated the horizon of your century, enlighten us too who, today more than ever, are thirsting for truth and true love. With the testimony of your life, you too have to say to us, after seven centuries, a word of hope and trust that draws its strength from the Gospel, eternal truth. Look, O Chiara, at your daughters who scattered throughout the world want to silently continue the mission of Mary, Virgin and Mother, in the Upper Room where the Church was born and developed under the breath of the Spirit. Look at all the young people who seek to realize themselves through the most disparate ways and guide them towards that fullness of life that only Christ can give us. Look, Chiara, even those who are towards the sunset of life and make them feel that nothing is lost when there is still the desire to start over to do better, to be better. And make it, O Chiara, that when we have reached the threshold of Eternity, we can all like you bless God who created us for his love! Amen.

PRAYER TO SANTA CHIARA

For that spirit of penance which induced you to constantly make your particular delight the most severe fasting, the most rigorous poverty, the most painful mortifications, and therefore the deprivation of all goods, the suffering of all evils, in order to consecrate yourselves entirely to love of Jesus Christ in the Order instituted by you, under the direction of your seraphic Father St. Francis, whose spirit you clothed so well in embracing his habit and rule, implore us all the grace to always prefer the abjection to glory, poverty to riches, mortification to pleasures, in order to be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ not only in name but also in fact. Pater, Ave, Gloria

Because of that very special devotion you had to Jesus Christ in Sacrament, so that finding yourselves in his presence and being soon raptured into ecstasy was the same thing, and although most beloved of extreme poverty, you always wanted to be magnificent what you had to serve. to the holy Altar, and for this with a short prayer made together with your sisters before the Sacrosanct Host you hurriedly chased away those Saracen barbarians who were already threatening not only your monastery with the last extermination, but also the whole city of Assisi; deh! ask us for the grace, O admirable St. Clare, to delight us in visiting the sacred temples, the frequency of the sacraments, assistance to the holy mysteries and the most affectionate devotion to the Holy Eucharist, in order to be comforted by it throughout the time of life and safely escorted to blissful eternity.

Pater, Ave, Glory.
