“So Padre Pio died”, the story of the nurse who was with the Saint

In the night between 22 and 23 September 1968, in cell number 1 of the convent of San Giovanni Rotondo, where he lived Padre Pio, another man was also there.

Pio Miscio, nurse of the House of Relief, and it was his turn to the hospital. He ran to the convent with Dr. John Scarale, with the respirator that was supposed to help the saint of Pietrelcina.

On Tele Radio Padre Pio, Miscio told that “Padre Pio died in the arms of Doctor Scarale” and, after his death, he continued to carry out his work as a nurse.

What happened that night

It was almost 2 in the morning. In Padre Pio's cell there were his general practitioner, the Dr. Sala, the father superior of the convent and some friars. Padre Pio was sitting in an armchair. His breathing was labored and he was very pale.

While Doctor Scarale pulled a tube out of the friar's nose, putting the oxygen mask on his face, Pio Miscio silently observed that dramatic scene.

"I was completely attentive to those moments, but I didn't do anything." Before losing consciousness, Padre Pio repeated: "Jesus, Mary, Jesus, Mary", without hearing what the doctor was saying. His gaze was lost in the void. When he lost consciousness, "Dr. Scarale tried to revive him several times, but to no avail."

As soon as the Saint died, the nurse was called by a nun to return to the hospital as he was the only one on duty. On the way, Miscio met a journalist who wanted news about the friar. "What should I say to you? At this moment I can't think of anything ”, being shocked by the disappearance of the Friar.

Pio Miscio and Doctor Scarale are currently the only two people still alive who were present at the death of Saint Pio.
