The miracle took place during a time of great political and military turmoil in Italy on the day of the annual fair of Penne, 700 brigands commanded by Bear Angel, they headed towards Città Sant'Angelo.

Upon the announcement of the attack, the citizens, led by a former Irish officer, Stefano la Roche they armed themselves and prepared to fight. Arrived at city gate the brigands began to target it with fire, while on the other side the citizens responded to the attack with great determination. This clash lasted 4 long hours.

The commander of the brigands, realizing that he had not been able to enter the city from that access, decided to look for another less protected one. He thus noticed one loophole near the Basilica of San Bernardo, protected only by a carpenter Davide Nicolai who, at the sight of Angelo d'Orso, withdrew. D'orso fired a shot but the carpenter was quicker and hit him in the eye, killing him.
