On 16 and 17 December a typhoon struck them several times Philippines southern and central areas causing floods, landslides, storms and extensive damage to agriculture.

According to ABS-CBN News, the priest of the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, father José Cecil Lobrigas, he encouraged father Salas to celebrate the evening mass on Thursday 16, even if the typhoon was already beginning to be felt in Tagbilaran.

Father Lobrigas also encouraged Father Salas to continue, so that "the prayers of the people give hope and strength".
