Burkina Faso: the attack on the church kills at least 14 people

At least 14 people were killed after gunmen opened fire inside a church in Burkina Faso.

On Sunday, the victims attended a service in a church in Hantoukoura, in the eastern part of the country.

The identity of gunmen is unknown and the reason is unclear.

Hundreds of people have been killed in the country in recent years, mainly by jihadist groups, sparking ethnic and religious tensions especially on the border with Mali.

A regional government statement says many people are injured.

A security source told the AFP news agency that armed people carried out the attack "by carrying out the faithful including pastor and children".

Another source said that gunmen fled on scooters.

Last October, 15 people were killed and two seriously injured in an attack on a mosque.

Jihadist attacks have increased in Burkina Faso since 2015, forcing thousands of schools to close.

The conflict spread across the border from neighboring Mali, where Islamist militants conquered the north of the country in 2012, before French troops pushed them back.
