How to pray in silence, the whisper of God

God also created silence.

Silence "resonates" in the universe.

Few are convinced that silence can be the most suitable language for prayer.

There are those who have learned to pray with words, only with words.

But he cannot pray with silence.

"... A time to be silent and a time to speak ..." (Ecclesiastes 3,7).

Someone, however, even conditioned by the training received, the time to be silent in prayer, and not only in prayer, just can't guess it.

Prayer "grows" within us in an inversely proportional way to words or, if we prefer, progress in prayer is parallel to progress in silence.

The water falling into an empty jug makes a lot of noise.

However, when the water level increases, the noise decreases more and more, until it disappears completely because the pot is full.

For many, silence in prayer is embarrassing, almost inconvenient.

They don't feel comfortable in silence. They entrust everything to words.

And they don't realize that only silence expresses everything.

Silence is fullness.

Being silent in prayer is equivalent to listening.

Silence is the language of mystery.

There can be no adoration without silence.

Silence is revelation.

Silence is the language of the depths.

We could say that silence does not represent so much the other side of the Word, but it is the Word itself.

After speaking, God is silent, and requires silence from us, not because the communication has ended, but because there are other things to say, other confidences, which can only be expressed by silence.

The most secret realities are entrusted to silence.

Silence is the language of love.

It is the way adopted by God to knock on the door.

It is also your way of opening Him.

If the words of God do not resonate as silence, they are not even the words of God.

In reality He speaks to you silently and listens to you without hearing you.

It is not for nothing that the true men of God are solitary and taciturn.

Whoever approaches him necessarily moves away from chatter and noise.

And those who find it, normally no longer find the words.

The closeness of God is silent.

Light is an explosion of silence.

In the Jewish tradition, speaking of the Bible, there is a famous Rabbinic saying also known as the Law of white spaces.

It says thus: “… Everything is written in the white spaces between one word and another; nothing else matters…".

In addition to the Holy Book, the observation applies to prayer.

The most, the best, is said, or rather not said, in the intervals between one word and another.

In the dialogue of love there is always a non-sayable that can be delivered exclusively to a deeper and more reliable communication than that of words.

Therefore, pray in silence.

Pray with silence.

Pray for silence.

"... Silentium pulcherrima caerimonia ...", said the ancients.

Silence represents the most beautiful rite, the most grandiose liturgy.

And if you really can't help speaking, accept however that your words are swallowed up in the depths of God's silence.

The whisper of God

Does the Lord speak in noise or in silence?

We all answer: in silence.

So why don't we keep silent sometimes?

Why don't we listen as soon as we hear some whisper of the Voice of God near us?

And again: does God speak to the troubled soul or the quiet soul?

We know very well that for this listening there must be a little calm, tranquility; it is necessary to isolate oneself from any looming excitement or stimulus.

To be ourselves, to be alone, to be within ourselves.

Here is the essential element: within us.

Therefore the meeting place is not outside, but inside.

It is therefore a good idea to create a recollection cell in one's spirit so that the Divine Guest can meet with us. (from the teachings of Pope Paul VI)
