Crucifix in the classroom? The sentence of the Cassation arrives

Crucifix in the classroom? Many will have heard of the delicate question of whether or not to appeal to one's freedom of belief by determining the possibility of carrying out the lesson in the classroom with the presence or absence of a crucifix in the classroom. A teacher appeals to his' no 'creed but the Supreme Court determines the answer:' 'Yes to the crucifix in the classroom, it is not a discriminatory act'.

Keeping a crucifix in the courtroom is not a discriminatory act

The story began a few months ago, a teacher wanted to carry out his lesson without the crucifix hanging in the classroom as a sign of freedom compared to what was instead provided by the headmaster of a professional institute on the basis of a resolution passed by the majority of the class assembly of the students.

The memory of the appeal to the Court of Cassation was not favorable for the teacher: the posting of the crucifix in the classrooms "to which, in a country like Italy, the lived experience of a community and cultural tradition are linked of a people - does not constitute an act of discrimination against the dissenting teacher for reasons of religion ".

"The classroom can welcome the presence of the crucifix - reads the sentence 24414 - when the school community concerned evaluates and decides independently to display it, possibly accompanying it with the symbols of other confessions present in the class and in any case seeking a reasonable accommodation between any different positions ".
