He was born into a deeply Christian family of good economic conditions. She was allowed to study and took advantage of it to read the Bible and meditate on it. Married to Patrizio, a modest owner of Tagaste (Numidia), not yet baptized, whose character was not good, and who was often unfaithful, with his mild and sweet character he could overcome the harshness. In 371 Patrick converted to Christianity and got baptized. Patrizio died the following year; Monica was 39 years old and had to take over the management of the house and the administration of the assets. He gave birth to his eldest son Agostino at 22 years of age, in 354. He had another son, Navigio, and a daughter whose name is unknown. He gave all three a Christian education. He suffered greatly from Augustine's loose conduct. When he moved to Rome, he decided to follow him, but he with a stratagem left her on the ground in Carthage, while they were embarking for Rome. Monica spent the night in tears on the tomb of St. Cyprian (as Augustine himself tells in the Confessions, V, 8,15:385). In 25 he was able to embark for Rome, and joined his son in Milan, where he held a chair of rhetoric. His motherly love and his prayers favored the conversion of Augustine, who received the catechesis of Saint Ambrose and was baptized on April 387, 56. With Augustine he left Milan for Rome, and then for Ostia, where they rented a house, waiting of a ship leaving for Africa. It was a period full of spiritual dialogues, which Augustine brings us back to his Confessions. There he fell ill, possibly with malaria, and in nine days died at the age of XNUMX.

PRAYER of a mother

in Santa Monica for a misled child

O God, who gave the conversion of his son Augustine to the tears of Santa Monica so that from your enemy he was one of the luminaries of your Church, look at my tears and answer the prayers of a desolate mother.

The pain of seeing you outraged by the son you gave me to make him a Saint is the most terrible test to which I can be subjected in this life. My God, if this is because of my sins, punish me in another way, but let my son stop offending you. Deh! forgive him and forgive me, O Lord so that we both enjoy the good fortune of praising and blessing you forever. So be it.
