LET'S PRAY

Remember, most holy Virgin Mother, that it has never been understood in the world that someone has resorted to you to implore your help and has been abandoned. I too, animated by such trust, I turn to you, most pure Virgin Mother, and I come to place myself in front of you, a disheartened and heartbroken sinner. You who are the Mother of the Word, do not reject my poor voice, but listen to it benevolently and hear me.

(3 times) O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who turn to you

Glory to the Father ...

Illuminated Virgin
Already from the dialogue with the angel Gabriel the gift of understanding appears in the virgin Mary. It does not exalt itself, it reflects, questions and responds with penetration and measure. Beyond his sober and wise words, a superior intelligence can be glimpsed. It is illuminated by the Holy Spirit.

1. From "intus légere" (reading within), the gift of the intellect is the intuition by which the spiritual man penetrates the depths of faith and also of natural truths, grasping (reading) their hidden and ultimate meanings in the light of Holy Spirit.

Jesus reproaches the Apostles: "Are you also without understanding?", When they do not understand that man is contaminated not by what he eats, but by what comes out of the heart, or when they remain in the materiality of his words without penetrating their meaning ( Mt 15, 16). And send them the Holy Spirit to understand the Scriptures and lead them towards the whole truth. Implicitly or expressly Jesus condemns the Pharisaic intelligence which remains superficial and exhibitionistic. The donkey and the ox recognized their master, but the people did not recognize their God, and with all their intelligence the wise did not recognize the Word of God.

It is proper to the intellect to penetrate, intuit, analyze, discern both in the truths of faith and in the natural ones. A particular act of the intellect is spiritual discernment by which "the spiritual man judges all things" (1 Cor 2:15) in relation to his underlying goodness or evil.

The lucid penetration of the things of faith is blessedness promised to those who have a pure heart: they will see God at the origin and at the end of everything, they will see his imprint in creatures.

The intellect is clouded by sin (as happened to David with Bath-sheba), especially by certain vices and passions that upset the general balance of the person: Satanism, mediumship, debauchery, spiritism, magic, adherence to atheist groups, alcoholism, drugs, etc.

Vices contrary to the intellect are dullness, coarseness of judgment, passion, etc.

2. It appears evident that Mary is not subject to such mental imbalances, and that her intellect, so penetrating, benefits more than any other from the bliss of the pure in heart. She is the Immaculate and the Virgin, she is the Mother of God, she is the Bride of the Holy Spirit. The gift of intellect pertains to her for various titles to an exceptional extent, as appears from her behavior.

At the wedding at Cana she senses the embarrassment of a family that risks a bad impression due to the exhaustion of the wine. On the other hand, aware of the divinity of the Son, he does not want to force the affair indiscreetly. It limits itself to pointing out the situation: "They have no more wine".

Beyond the evasive joke of Jesus ("And what do we have to do with it, woman?") She glimpses the condescension of the Son and says to the servants: "Do whatever he tells you". And Jesus performs the miracle of the transformation of water into wine.

Mary's intelligence is revealed in her behavior with Joseph following the announcement of the Angel: she is aware of what is happening in her body and of the surprise that Joseph will have when he realizes that she is pregnant; however, he does not want to anticipate a confidence that will need a guarantee equal to the exceptional importance of the event. Then she leaves the solution of the case to Providence, and the Angel intervenes to reassure Joseph that "what is generated in her is the work of the Holy Spirit".

However acute, human intelligence needs reflection, analysis, waiting for confirmation: "The mother kept all these things in her heart" (Lk 2:51); "Mary kept all these things in mind, pondering them in her heart" (Lk 2:19).

3. The gift of the intellect shines in fullness in the glorious condition of Mary: the Queen of the world exercises a maternal over-understanding of the events of the Church, intervening with an understanding of love to help those who turn to her.

Mary leads to Jesus

«In the Virgin Mary everything is relative to Christ and everything depends on him: in view of him, God the Father from all eternity chose her as all holy Mother and adorned her with gifts of the Spirit granted to no one else. Certainly genuine Christian piety has never failed to highlight the indissoluble bond and essential reference of the Virgin to the divine Savior. However, it seems to us particularly in accordance with the spiritual direction of our age, dominated and absorbed by the "question of Christ", that in the expressions of worship to the Virgin the Christological aspect has special prominence and that it is done so that they reflect the plan of God, who predetermined "with one and the same decree the origin of Mary and the incarnation of divine Wisdom". This will help to give more solidarity to the Mother of Jesus and to make her an effective instrument for reaching "full knowledge of the Son of God, to the point of reaching the measure of Christ's full stature" (Eph 4:13) "(Marialis Cultus 25 ).
