O glorious St. Matthew, in your Gospel you describe Jesus as the coveted Messiah who fulfilled the prophets of the Old Covenant and as the new Legislator who founded a Church of New Alliance. Grant us the grace to see Jesus live in his church and to follow his teachings in our life on earth so that we can live forever with him in heaven. Dear Levi, now known as Matthew, you were first a tax collector, a tax collector and then a gatherer of souls for Christ after immediately following his call. You later wrote wonderful tales for your Jewish brothers of what Jesus, descendant of Davide, he said and did as Teacher and Savior.

Make all accountants imitate your example in providing accurate and honest reports. Dear publican who has become a saint, after collecting taxes and tolls, how wonderful was your conversion by grace when you abandoned your earthly goods, you followed the poor Nazareth. The Mammon of money is still revered. Inspire bankers with kindness and a desire to help where they can; since what is done to the least, to the poor, is done to Jesus, the Son of man. 

We thank you, Heavenly Father, for the testimony of your apostle and evangelist Matthew to the Gospel of your Son our Savior; and we pray that, following his example, we may with will and heart ready to obey the call of our Lord to follow him; for Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and with the Spirit Holy, one God, now and forever.
