Devotion to the Sacred Heart: the prayer that Padre Pio recited in the month of June

The most significant source for devotion to the Sacred Heart in the form in which it is known today was Santa Margherita Maria Alacoica (1647-1690), a nun of the Order of the Visitation of Mary Most Holy, who claimed to have received apparitions of Jesus Christ in the village French Burgundian of Paray-le-Monial, the first on December 27, 1673, the feast of Saint John the Evangelist and the last 18 months later, revealing the form of devotion, the main characteristics are the reception of Holy Communion on the first Friday of each month , Eucharistic adoration during the "holy hour" of Thursday and the celebration of the feast of the Sacred Heart. She said that in her vision she was instructed to spend an hour every Thursday evening to meditate on the Agony of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Probably in June or July 1674, Sister Margaret Mary affirmed that Jesus had asked to be honored under the shape of his heart, also saying that, when he appeared radiant with love, he asked for a devotion of atoning love: the frequent reception of Communion, especially on the first Friday of the month and observance of the holy hour.
During the octave of Corpus Domini in 1675, probably on June 16, the vision known as the "great apparition" took place, where Jesus said: "Here is the Heart that so loved men ... Instead of gratitude, I receive from most part (of humanity) only ingratitude “, and asked Margherita Maria for a repair party on Friday after the octave of Corpus Domini, asking her to consult her confessor Father Claude de la Colombière, then superior of the small Jesuit house of Paray le Monial.
Father de la Colombière directed Sister Margaret Mary to write an account of the apparition, which circulated discreetly in France and England. After her death on February 15, 1682, her retreat diary contained a copy in her handwriting of the story she had requested from Margaret Mary, along with some reflections on the usefulness of devotion. This diary, including the story - an "offering" to the Sacred Heart in which devotion was explained - was published in Lyons in 1684. The little book was widely read, especially in Paray le Monial. Margaret Mary reported that she felt "terrible confusion" about the contents of the book, but decided to make the best of it, approving the book for the dissemination of her devoted devotion. Together with the Visitandines, priests, and laity have espoused devotion, in particular the Capuchins. The reported apparitions served as a catalyst for the promotion of devotion to the Sacred Heart. The Jesuit Father Croiset wrote a book entitled Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and Fr. Joseph de Gallifet, SJ, promoted devotion. The mission of propagating the new devotion was especially entrusted to the religious of the Visitation and to the priests of the Society of Jesus.
