Devotion of the day: falling back into sin

One falls back out of weakness. Our life and our confessions are a continuous refrain of purpose and relapses. What a humiliation for our pride! What a fear divine judgments must inspire us! But if you seriously commit yourself to overcoming that dominant passion, to keep yourself from that bad habit, if you help yourself with prayers, mortification, with the Sacraments, and nevertheless fall back: do not worry: this is permitted by God; keep fighting. God will forgive your weakness.

One falls back out of neglect. The sleepy one wants and does not want, he raises his head and falls again; ... thus the lukewarm, the negligent. Today it proposes and stands firm; but it always costs a lot to fight; mortification, prayer, moving away from that occasion is contrary to the will;… it takes some means and soon abandons it; proposes to do better tomorrow, in the meantime today falls. This is a guilty neglect. Do you believe the Lord excuses you?

One falls back by one's own will. This happens to those who remain in the midst of dangers, to those who trust in their own strength, to those who rather love to vent their passion than to please God, to those who do not practice the means suggested by prudence although they have difficulty, to those who propose, but he is convinced that he cannot keep himself… Unhappy! too late he will realize that the fault is all his own. Think about it and change your life.
