Devotion of the thousand Ave Maria of Santa Caterina from Bologna

DEVOTION OF THE THOUSAND AVE MARIES

Short story

The devotion of the thousand Hail Marys dates back to Saint Catherine of Bologna. The Saint used to recite a thousand Ave Maria on Christmas night.

On the night of December 25, 1445, she was absorbed in contemplating the mystery of the birth of Jesus when the Most Holy Virgin appeared to her and offered her the Child Jesus; Catherine held him in her arms - as she herself expresses "for the space of a fifth part of an hour"

In memory of the prodigy, the daughters of the Saint in the Corpus Domini Monastery, every year, on holy night, repeat the thousand Hail Marys, a devotion which soon entered the prayer of the faithful.

To facilitate this devotion, the thousand Hail Marys are recited - forty every day - in the 25 days preceding Christmas, from 29 November to 23 December.

Cento Croci and Cento Ave Maria.

It is recited on August 15 of each year on the feast of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo.
Devotion of the Archconfraternity of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo and of the Souls of Purgatory in Cava dei Tirreni SA.

It starts with the sign of the Cross.

O God come and save me!
O Lord, make haste to help me!

Glory to the Father to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, and now and always, forever and ever. Amen.
Then it is said:
False enemy turn away
with my soul you don't have what to do,
today is the day of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
I make a hundred crosses and a hundred Ave Maria.
Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.
You are blessed among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
