Devotion today January 2, 2020: who is he?

Scripture reading - Mark 1: 9-15

A voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am very happy. "- Mark 1:11

We might think that the beginning of Jesus' ministry that changed the world and made history would begin with an important announcement. We might expect this to become a big deal, such as when a nation's president or prime minister is elected.

But the heavenly statement that opens Jesus' ministry is pretty low. It is also quite private: Jesus had not yet gathered disciples or followers to witness this event.

Also, heavenly power doesn't swoop like a great eagle with bared claws. Instead it is described as coming smoothly like a dove. The Spirit of God, who had hovered over the waters of creation (Genesis 1: 2), equally graces the person of Jesus, giving us a sign that a new creation is about to be born and that this new effort will also be good. Here in Mark we are given the heavenly vision that Jesus is the one and truly loved Son with whom God is very pleased.

No matter what you think of yourself, here's a wonderful tip: God came into the world with the loving intention of making a new creation that includes you. What in your life needs to be recreated by the transformation and blessing of Jesus Christ? Jesus himself declares in verse 15: “The time has come. . . . The kingdom of God has drawn near. Repent and Believe the Good News! "

Prayer

Thank you, God, for introducing me to Jesus and for including me in what Jesus came to do. Help me live as part of his new creation. Amen.
