1. Nausea of ​​divine things. As the body, so the soul, suffers its languidity in the spiritual life. The first sign is a nausea in prayer, in the sacraments, in practicing virtue. It is a listlessness, a tedium, a dozing off in divine service. Indeed, like the Jews in the desert, the onions of Egypt, that is, the taste of the world, the outburst of passions, seem to be preferred a hundred times to the windfall of God. 2. Aversion to remedies. The heart does not rest in this state, rather it points to the remedy. It is clear that one should fight, strive, pray to get out of this languor; but everything appears austere, difficult!… The smallest difficulties dismay, repel; the easier virtues seem impractical - "it takes too much, I can't", - these are excuses that denote the internal evil that threatens the ruin of the soul. 3. Distrust and despair. God does not always answer the first prayer, nor do the first efforts always help us out of languor. Instead of humiliating and returning to prayer and battle, the languid deduces that it is useless to pray, that fighting does not help.
