Become a member of the family of Jesus

Jesus said many shocking things during his public ministry. They were "shocking" in that his words were often far beyond the limited understanding of many who listened to him. Interestingly, he was not in the habit of quickly trying to clear up misunderstandings. Rather, he often left those who misunderstood what he said to remain in their ignorance. There is a powerful lesson in this.

First of all, let's take a look at the example of this passage from today's Gospel. There is no doubt that there was probably some sort of silence that came upon the crowd when Jesus said this. Many who listened most likely thought that Jesus was rude to his mother and relatives. But was it him? Is this how his Blessed Mother took it? Certainly not.

What highlights this is that His Blessed Mother, above all, is His mother mainly because of her obedience to the will of God. Her blood relationship was significant. But she was even more her mother because she fulfilled the requirement of perfect obedience to the will of God. Therefore, for her perfect obedience to God, she was perfectly the mother of her Son.

But this passage also reveals that Jesus often did not care that some people misunderstood him. Because that's how it is? Because he knows how his message is best communicated and received. He knows that his message can only be received by those who listen with an open heart and with faith. And he knows that those who have an open heart in faith will understand, or at least meditate on what he said until the message sinks.

Jesus' message cannot be discussed and defended as a philosophical maxim can be. Rather, his message can only be received and understood by those who have an open heart. There should be no doubt that when Mary listened to those words of Jesus with her perfect faith, she understood and was full of joy. It was her perfect "Yes" to God that allowed her to understand everything that Jesus said. As a result, this allowed Mary to claim the holy title of "Mother" far more than her blood relationship. His blood relationship is undoubtedly very significant, but his spiritual connection is much more.

Reflect today on the fact that you too are called to be part of the intimate family of Jesus. You are called into his family through your obedience to his holy will. You are called to be attentive, listen, understand and therefore act on everything that speaks. Say "Yes" to our Lord today, and allow that "Yes" to be the foundation of your family relationship with Him.

Lord, help me always listen with an open heart. Help me reflect on your words with faith. In this act of faith, allow me to deepen my bond with you as I enter your divine family. Jesus I believe in you.
