Scientific dossier on the visionaries of Medjugorje: the final report

The phenomenon of the apparitions of Medjugorje in Yugoslavia, studied in different periods of the year 1984 on 5 visionaries, proves scientifically inexplicable. The clinical and instrumental observation conducted by the French team allows us to affirm that these young people are normal, healthy in body and mind.
The detailed clinical and paraclinical studies carried out before, during and after the ecstasies lead to the conclusion that scientifically there is no pathological modification of the studied objective parameters: electroencephalogram, electrooculogram, electrocardiogram, auditory potentials.
Then:
- this is not epilepsy, electroencephalograms demonstrate this
- it is not a matter of sleep or dream, because this too is shown by electroencephalograms
- it is not a question of hallucination in the pathological sense of the term.
It is not an auditory or visual hallucination linked to an anomaly at the level of the peripheral sensory receptors (since the auditory and visual pathways are normal).
It is not a paroxysmal hallucination: electroencephalograms demonstrate this.
It is not a dreamlike hallucination as can be observed in acute mental confusions or in the course of the evolution of atrophic dementias.
- it is not a matter of hysteria, neurosis or pathological ecstasy, because the visionaries have no symptoms of these affections in all their clinical forms.
- this is not catalepsy, because during ecstasy the muscles of mimicry are not inhibited but function normally.
The attention movements of the eyeball of the boys cease simultaneously at the beginning of the ecstasy and immediately resume at the end. During the ecstatic phenomenon the looks converge and there is a face to face between the visionaries and the person who is the object of their visions.
These young people always have a non-pathological behavior and every evening at 17.45 pm they fall into a "state of prayer" and interpersonal communication. They are not marginalized, dreamers, tired of life, distressed: they are free and happy, well integrated in their country and in the modern world.
In Medjugorje, the ecstasies are not pathological and there is no cheating. No scientific denomination seems suitable to designate these phenomena.
They could be defined as a state of intense prayer, separate from the outside world, a state of contemplation and coherent and healthy communication, with a distinct person whom they only see, hear and can touch.
