Is it true that the dead watch over us? The theologian's answer

Anyone who has recently lost a close relative or close friend knows how strong the desire is to know if he is watching over us or if he is lost forever. If it is the person with whom you have spent most of your life, your spouse, the desire to continue the journey together is perhaps even more excruciating. What does our religion answer to those who ask if our loved ones are looking at us even after death?

First of all, it is necessary to remember that the Word of God was given to us not for the purpose of dispelling our doubts or supporting our dreams, but with the aim of giving us the tools necessary to lead a happy life in God. What is not spoken of , should remain in mystery, as superfluous or not strictly necessary, as our lives have the possibility to continue even when our half is called to God.

In any case, wanting to extrapolate an indirect response from the sacred texts, one could observe how the Church is founded on the communion of Saints. This means that the living and the dead participate in forming it in equal measure, and that therefore the two worlds are united in one ultimate purpose. And if we can help our extinct loved ones to reach Heaven, by shortening their stay in Purgatory thanks to our prayers, it is equally true that the dead can help us, without however being conditioned by the requests of the living.
