Spiritual exercises: a heart that has compassion

Is there a difference between "sympathy" and "compassion?" If so, what is the difference? And which is more desirable? Sympathy simply means that we feel bad for another. It means, in a way, that we feel sorry for them. But compassion goes much further. It means that we go into their suffering and carry their weight with them. It means that we suffer with them just as our Lord suffered with and for us. We just have to try to offer real compassion to others and invite them to offer us compassion.

How well do you do? How much do you offer true compassion? Do you see the wounds of others and try to be there for them, encouraging them in Christ? And when you suffer, do you allow the compassion of others to flood your soul? Do you allow God's Mercy to reach you through them? Or do you just seek pity from others to let yourself fall into the trap of self-pity? Reflect on the difference between these two qualities and ask our Lord to make your heart of genuine compassion for all.

PRAYER

Lord, please give me a heart full of mercy and compassion. Help me to be attentive to the needs of others and to reach them with your Divine Heart. May he ardently desire to bring your healing grace to all the needy. And I could never immerse myself in my self-pity or seek that compassion from others. But may it be open to the compassion that your heart wishes to offer me through the love of others. Jesus I believe in you.

EXERCISE: FROM TODAY AND FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE WHEN YOU ARE IN FRONT OF A NEEDY PERSON, YOU WILL AVOID PIETY BUT YOU WILL ACT WITH COMPASSION. IMMEDIATELY SEE ACCORDING TO YOUR POSSIBILITY AND YOUR CONSCIOUSNESS THE HELP YOU CAN GIVE AS JESUS DID IN THE GOSPEL THAT FREED AND GUARUVA AND MOVED WITH COMPASSION FOR THE NEXT.
