The last moments of Jesus on the Cross revealed by the mystical Catherine Emmerick

The first word of Jesus on the cross
After the crucifixion of the thieves, the executioners collected their instruments and threw the last insults to the Lord before retiring.

The Pharisees, in turn, riding on horseback before Jesus addressed some outrageous words to him and then they also withdrew.

Fifty Roman soldiers, under the command of the Arab Abenadar, replaced the first hundred.

After the death of Jesus, Abenadar was baptized by taking the name of Ctesifon. The second in command was called Cassius, and he too became a Christian with the name of Longinus.

Twelve other Pharisees, twelve Sadducees, twelve scribes and several elders arrived on the mountain. Among the latter were those who had asked Pilate to modify the inscription and were exasperated because the prosecutor had not even wanted to receive them. Those on horseback made the rounds of the platform and drove the holy Virgin away calling her a perverse woman.

John led her into the arms of Mary Magdalene and Martha.

The Pharisees, who came before Jesus, shook their heads with contempt and mocked him with these words:

"Shame on you, impostor! How are you going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days? You have always wanted to help others and you don't even have the strength to help yourself. If you are a son of the God of Israel, come down from that cross and be helped by him! ».

Even the Roman soldiers mocked him saying:

«If you are the king she Jews and the Son of God, save yourself!».

Jesus was crucified unconscious. Then Gesma said:

"His demons have abandoned him!"

Meanwhile a Roman soldier placed a sponge soaked in vinegar on a stick and raised it to the lips of Jesus, who tasted a little. Making that gesture, the sun given echoed the thief and said:

"If you are the king of the Jews, help yourself!"

The Lord raised his head a little and said:

«Father, forgive them, because they don't know what they are doing.

Then he continued his prayer in silence.

On hearing these words, Gesma shouted to him:

"If you are the Christ, help you and us!"

And so saying he continued to taunt him.

But Dismas, the thief on the right, was deeply moved when he heard Jesus pray for his enemies.

Hearing the voice of her Son, the Virgin Mary rushed to the cross followed by John, Salome and Mary of Cleopa, unable to hold her back.

The guard centurion did not push them away and let them pass.

As soon as the Mother approached the cross, she felt comforted by Jesus' prayer. At the same time, illuminated by grace, Dismas recognized that Jesus and his Mother had healed him in his childhood, and with a strong voice broken by emotion he shouted:

«How can you insult Jesus while praying for you? He patiently suffered all your insults and affront. This is truly the Prophet, our King and the Son of God ».

At those words of blame, coming out of the mouth of a murderer on the gallows, a great uproar broke out among the bystanders. Many took stones to stone him, but Abenadar did not allow it, he dispersed them and restored order.

Addressing his companion, who continued to insult Jesus, Dismas said to him:

«Are you not therefore afraid of the Lord, you who are condemned to the same torture? We are rightly here because we deserved the punishment with our actions, but he did nothing wrong, he always consoled his neighbor. Think about your last hour and get converted! ».

Then, deeply moved, he confessed to Jesus all his sins by saying:

«Lord, if you condemn me, it is according to justice; but, nevertheless, have pity on me! ».

Jesus replied:

"You will experience my mercy!"

Thus Dismas obtained the grace of sincere repentance.

Everything that was told took place between noon and half past noon. While the good thief repented, extraordinary signs took place in nature which all filled with fear.

At about ten o'clock, when Pilate's judgment was pronounced, he had hailstones at times, then the sky had cleared and the sun had come out. At noon, thick, reddish clouds covered the sky; at noon and a half, which corresponds to the so-called sixth hour of the Jews, there was the miraculous darkening of the sun.

By divine grace "I experienced many details of that prodigious event, but I cannot describe them adequately".

I can only say that I was transported to the universe, where I found myself among myriads of heavenly ways that cross in a wonderful harmony. The moon, like a globe of fire, appeared in the east and quickly stood before the sun already covered by clouds.

Then, always in spirit, I descended to Jerusalem, from where, with fright, I saw a dark body on the eastern side of the sun which soon covered it entirely.

The bottom of this body was dark yellow, haloed by a red circle like fire.

Little by little, the whole sky darkened and turned red. Men and beasts were seized with fear; the cattle ran away and the birds sought shelter towards the Calvary line. They were so frightened that they passed close to the ground and let themselves be captured with their hands. The streets of the city were wrapped in thick fog, the inhabitants groping their way. Many lay on the ground with their heads covered, others beat their breasts moaning in pain. The Pharisees themselves looked at the sky with fear: they were so frightened by that reddish darkness that they even ceased to injure Jesus. However, they tried to make these phenomena understood as natural.
