What we are going to tell you is a curious story full of meaning that leads us to delve into a little-known aspect of this saint, his being a Thaumaturge.

The story of the miraculous oil

One night the saint, in order to read the sacred scripture, needed a littleoil to power his lamp. So I think of asking the cook of the monastery, but the cook in that moment of serious famine had received the order not to give the oil to anyone. The saint, living as a hermit, was unaware of this order, so he decided to feed his lamp with water.

One might think of an absurd idea, as the water, not being flammable, would never have caught fire and consequently would never have been able to light the lamp. But it didn't happen that way. The lamp miraculously it lit up for an entire night, giving the saint the opportunity to complete his reading.

This miracle was the first of a long series that saw oil as the protagonist.

The prayer of Saint Charbel

For you to pray to this saint you will find his below prayer.

O great thaumaturge Saint Charbel, who spent your life in solitude in a humble and hidden hermitage, renouncing the world and its vain pleasures, and now reign in the glory of the Saints, in the splendor of the Holy Trinity, intercede for us.

Enlighten our mind and heart, increase our faith and strengthen our will. Increase our love for God and neighbor. Help us to do good and avoid evil. Defend us from visible and invisible enemies and rescue us throughout our lives.

You who perform wonders for those who invoke you and obtain the healing of innumerable evils and the solution of problems without human hope, look upon us with pity and if it conforms to the divine will and to our greater good, obtain from God the grace we implore, but above all help us to imitate your holy and virtuous life. Amen.
