The prophetic role of Christ

Jesus said to them, "Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing." And everyone talked a lot about him and marveled at the beautiful words that came out of his mouth. Luke 4: 21-22a

Jesus had just arrived in Nazareth, where he had grown up, and entered the temple area to read the scriptures. He read the passage from Isaiah: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he consecrated me to bring good news to the poor. He sent me to proclaim freedom for prisoners and restore sight to the blind, to leave the oppressed free and to proclaim an acceptable year for the Lord. After reading this, he sat down and proclaimed that Isaiah's prophecy was fulfilled.

The reaction of the people of his city is interesting. "Everyone talked a lot about him and marveled at the kind words that came from his mouth." At least, that's the initial reaction. But if we continue reading we see that Jesus challenges people and, consequently, they were full of fury and they tried to kill him then and there.

Often, we have the same reactions to Jesus. In the beginning, we can speak well of him and receive him gracefully. For example, at Christmas we can sing Christmas carols and celebrate his birthday with joy and celebration. We could go to church and wish people a Merry Christmas. We can set up a manger scene and decorate with Christian symbols of our faith. But how deep is all this? Sometimes Christmas celebrations and traditions are only superficial and do not reveal a true depth of belief or Christian faith. What happens when this precious Christ-Child speaks of truth and conviction? What happens when the gospel calls us to repentance and conversion? What is our reaction to Christ in these moments?

As we continue the last week of our Christmas season, we reflect today on the fact that the little boy we honor at Christmas has grown up and is now telling us words of truth. Think about whether you are willing to honor him not only as a child, but also as a prophet of all truth. Are you willing to listen to all his message and receive it with joy? Are you willing to allow His words of Truth to penetrate your heart and transform your life?

Lord, I love you and I want everything you said to penetrate my heart and attract me in all truth. Help me to accept you not only as a child born in Bethlehem, but also as the great Prophet of Truth. May I never be offended by the words you speak and can always be open to your prophetic role in my life. Jesus I believe in you.
