How prayer can help you solve problems

We often ask God for the things we want. But it can be helpful to pause and ask yourself: "What does God want from me?"

Life can be tough Sometimes it feels like we face challenge after challenge, punctuated by brief moments of happiness. We spend a lot of our time hoping and wishing things get better. But challenges can lead to growth, and growth is essential to our progression as we advance.

How to get started.

Sometimes we feel unhappy and we don't even know why. Something is out of balance or just not working. It could be a relationship, something at work, an unresolved problem, or an unrealistic expectation. The first place to start is by identifying the problem. This requires humility, meditation and prayer. When we pray, we should try to have an honest conversation with God: "Please help me understand what worries me." Delete a notebook or smartphone and record your impressions.

Define the problem.

While praying for the problem, try to give it a definition. For example, suppose the problem you are experiencing is that you are losing interest in your job. You were able to make this discovery because you were willing to be humble and ask God for help.

Study the options.

We all go through times when we lose our enthusiasm for work. It can help you find other activities that provide fulfillment. Many people feel happier when they help out in their community. If you're interested, check out JustServe.org for ideas. But providing a service may not be the only answer. Losing interest in a job could mean a career change. Make a list of the type of work that makes you happy. Check out those things that are available in your current job. If you miss a lot, it might be time to start looking for something new.

Act.

Before diving, pray for assistance. Be humble and teachable. As the poet Thomas Moore wrote, "Humility, that low and sweet root, from which all the heavenly virtues spring." Give the problem your best thought and work hard to find the best solution. And then, when the time is right, go for it! Act in faith and move forward with your solution.

What if your solution doesn't work? And now?

Some problems are more complex than others. Do not give up. Just repeat the steps and keep praying:

Define the problem.
Study the options.
Act.
Remember, this is about your personal growth. You must enter the job. God does not intervene and solve the problems for us, but rather reassures us, confirms that we are on the right path and gives us the courage to move forward.

Some things to think about:

God does not grant wishes; Love, support and encourage.
Consider the best solution to a problem or challenge, then ask God for confirmation.
If you don't succeed at first, you are normal. Try again.
