INDULGENCES FOR THE DEAD

The Sacred Apostolic Penitentiary, on June 29, 1968, issued the "Enchiridium Indulgentiarum", which is still valid today. From this «Document» we report what we believe useful for the faithful regarding the Indulgences applicable to our deceased.

I - General rules a) Indulgence is partial or plenary according to whether it frees part or all of the temporal penalty due for sins. b) Both partial and plenary indulgences can always be applied to the dead by way of suffrage. c) Plenary indulgence can only be acquired once a day.

Il - Daily plenary indulgences: a) The adoration of the Holy Sacrament for at least half an hour. b) The pious reading of the Holy Scripture for at least half an hour. c) The pious exercise of the Via Crucis. d) The recitation of the Rosary (also a third part) in church or family. e) The faithful who devoutly visit the cemetery and pray, even mentally for the dead, are granted an indulgence, applicable only to the dead ... from the first day of November until the eighth day of the same month.

III - Annual or occasional plenary indulgences a) Plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who piously and devoutly receives, even if only by radio, the blessing imparted by the Supreme Pontiff to the World. b) Plenary indulgence is granted to those who participate in the spiritual exercises for at least three days. c) Plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who piously visits the parish church on the feast of the titular or on August XNUMX, in which the indulgence of the "Por-ziuncola" (the Perdon of Assisi) occurs. d) Plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who renew their baptismal promises on the "eve of Easter and on the anniversary of their baptism. e) There are also other plenary indulgences for particular circumstances.

IV - Conditions for the purchase of the plenary indulgence a) Sacramental confession (which can also be done in the preceding or following days) b) Eucharistic communion (which can also be done in the preceding or following days). c) With a sacramental confession several plenary indulgences can be acquired. d) When the plenary indulgence requires a visit to a church, one must recite the "Our Father" and the "Creed" in it and pray for the Pope.

V - "Partial" indulgences "Partial" indulgences are many and ordinarily combined with the recitation of a certain prayer or prayer.
