Start your day with quick daily devotions: February 4th

Scripture reading - 1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18

Always rejoice, pray continuously, give thanks in all circumstances. . . . - 1 Thessalonians 5:17

As believers, we are taught to pray. But why should we pray? Prayer brings us into communion with God, creator and sustainer of the universe. God gives us life and supports our daily life. We need to pray because God has everything we need and wants us to thrive. Also, we should pray that in prayer we can give thanks to God for all that he is and all he does.

In prayer we recognize our total dependence on God. It can be difficult to admit that we are completely dependent. But at the same time, prayer opens our hearts to more fully experience the breathtaking scope of God's extraordinary grace and mercy for us.

Praying Thanksgiving isn't just a good idea or suggestion, though. It is a command, as the apostle Paul reminds us. By always rejoicing and praying continuously, we obey God's will for us in Christ.

Sometimes we think of commands as a burden. But obeying this command will bless us beyond measure and put us in the best position to love and serve God in the world.

So when you pray today (and always), spend time in fellowship with God, ask him for whatever you need and feel the strong surge of his grace and mercy that results in a sense of gratitude that shapes all that do.

Prayer

We come before you, Lord, with the heart of thanks for who you are and for all you do. Amen.
