Exodus 7
The plagues of Egypt
The Lord said to Moses: “See, I have placed you to take the place of God for Pharaoh: Aaron your brother will be your prophet. You will tell him how much I will order you: Aaron your brother will speak to Pharaoh to let the Israelites leave his country. But I will harden Pharaoh's heart and multiply my signs and wonders in the land of Egypt. Pharaoh will not listen to you and I will put my hand against Egypt and thus bring out my hosts, my people of the Israelites, from the land of Egypt, with the intervention of great punishments. Then the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord, when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring out the Israelites from among them! ". Moses and Aaron carried out what the Lord had commanded them; they did exactly that. Moses was eighty years old and Aaron eighty-three when they spoke to Pharaoh. The Lord said to Moses and Aaron: When Pharaoh asks you: Do a prodigy in your support! you will say to Aaron: Take the stick and throw it in front of the pharaoh and it will become a snake! ”. Moses and Aaron therefore came to Pharaoh and carried out what the Lord had commanded them: Aaron threw the staff before Pharaoh and before his servants and it became a snake. Then the pharaoh summoned the wise men and the spellcasters, and the magicians of Egypt also did the same with their magic. They each threw his stick and the sticks became snakes. But the staff of Aaron swallowed their sticks. But Pharaoh's heart stubborn and did not listen to them, according to what the Lord had predicted.

Then the Lord said to Moses: “Pharaoh's heart is adamant: he refused to let the people go. Go to Pharaoh in the morning when he goes out to the waters. You will stand before him on the bank of the Nile, holding the staff that has changed into a snake. You will tell him: The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to tell you: Let my people go, so that they can serve me in the desert; but so far you have not obeyed. The Lord says: From this fact you will know that I am the Lord; behold, with the stick in my hand I strike a blow on the waters that are in the Nile: they will turn into blood. The fish that are in the Nile will die and the Nile will become fetid, so that the Egyptians will no longer be able to drink the waters of the Nile! ". The Lord said to Moses: “Command Aaron: Take your staff and stretch out your hand on the waters of the Egyptians, on their rivers, canals, ponds, and on all their collections of water; become blood, and there is blood throughout the country of Egypt, even in wooden and stone containers! ". Moses and Aaron carried out what the Lord had commanded: Aaron raised his staff and struck the waters that were in the Nile under the eyes of Pharaoh and his servants. All the waters that were in the Nile changed into blood. The fish that were in the Nile died and the Nile became fetid, so that the Egyptians could no longer drink the waters. There was blood all over the country of Egypt. But the magicians of Egypt, with their magic, did the same thing. Pharaoh's heart stubborn and did not listen to them, according to what the Lord had predicted. The pharaoh turned his back and went back to his house and did not even take this into account. All the Egyptians then dug around the Nile to draw water to drink, because they could not drink the waters of the Nile. Seven days passed after the Lord struck the Nile. Then the Lord said to Moses: “Go and report to Pharaoh: The Lord says: Let my people go so that I can serve them! If you refuse to let it go, behold, I will strike all your territory with frogs: the Nile will begin to teem with frogs; they will go out, they will enter your house, the room where you sleep and on your bed, in the house of your ministers and among your people, in your ovens and in your cupboards. Frogs will come out against you and all your ministers. "

The Lord said to Moses, "Command Aaron: Stretch out your hand with your stick on the rivers, canals and ponds and bring out the frogs to the land of Egypt!" Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt and the frogs went out and covered the land of Egypt. But the wizards, with their magic, did the same thing and sent frogs out to the land of Egypt. Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron and said: “Pray to the Lord, that you may remove the frogs from me and my people; I will let the people go, so that they can sacrifice to the Lord! ". Moses said to Pharaoh: "Do me the honor of commanding myself for when I must pray for you and your ministers and your people, to free you and your houses from the frogs, so that they will remain only in the Nile." He replied, "For tomorrow." He went on: “According to your word! Because you know that there is no one equal to the Lord our God, the frogs will withdraw from you and your homes, your servants and your people: they will remain only in the Nile. " Moses and Aaron turned away from Pharaoh and Moses pleaded with the Lord about the frogs he had sent against Pharaoh. The Lord worked according to the word of Moses and the frogs died in the houses, courtyards and fields. They collected them in many piles and the country was softened by them. But Pharaoh saw that relief had intervened, he persisted and did not listen to them, according to what the Lord had predicted.

Then the Lord said to Moses: "Command Aaron: Spread your stick, strike the dust of the earth: it will turn into mosquitoes throughout the land of Egypt." So they did: Aaron stretched out his hand with his staff, struck the dust of the earth and raged mosquitoes on men and beasts; all the dust in the country had turned into mosquitoes all over Egypt. The wizards did the same with their magic to produce mosquitoes, but they failed and the mosquitoes raged on men and beasts. Then the wizards said to Pharaoh: "It is the finger of God!". But Pharaoh's heart stubborn and did not listen, according to what the Lord had predicted.

Then the Lord said to Moses: “Get up early in the morning and introduce yourself to Pharaoh when he will go to the waters; You will tell him: The Lord says: Let my people go so that I can serve them! If you do not let my people go, behold, I will send the flies on you, your ministers, your people and your houses: the houses of the Egyptians will be full of mosconi and also the soil on which they are found. But on that day I will exclude the country of Gosen, where my people live, so that there are no flies, because you know that I, the Lord, am in the middle of the country! So I will make a distinction between my people and your people. Tomorrow this sign will happen ”. So did the Lord: an imposing mass of flies entered the house of Pharaoh, the house of his ministers and throughout the land of Egypt; the region was devastated by blowflies. Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron and said, "Go sacrifice to your God in the land!" But Moses replied: “It is not appropriate to do so because what we sacrifice to the Lord our God is abomination for the Egyptians. If we make an abominable sacrifice to the Egyptians before their eyes, perhaps they will not stone us? We will go to the desert, three days' walk, and we will sacrifice to the Lord our God, according to what he orders us! ". Then Pharaoh replied: “I will let you go and you can sacrifice to the Lord in the desert. But don't go too far and pray for me. " Moses replied: “Behold, I will go out of your presence and pray to the Lord; tomorrow the floats will withdraw from Pharaoh, his ministers and his people. But the pharaoh stops making fun of us, not letting the people go, so that he can sacrifice to the Lord! ". Moses turned away from Pharaoh and prayed to the Lord. The Lord acted according to the word of Moses and removed the flies from the pharaoh, his ministers and his people: not a single one remained. But the pharaoh persisted once again and did not let the people go.
