Think about a person's dignity today

Amen, I tell you, whatever you did for one of these younger brothers of mine, you did it for me. " Matthew 25:40

Who is that "younger brother"? Interestingly, Jesus specifically indicates the person considered the least, as opposed to a more general statement that includes all people. Why not say "Whatever you do to others ...?" This would include everything we serve. But instead Jesus pointed to the younger brother. Perhaps this should be seen, in particular, as the most sinful, the weakest, the most seriously ill person, disability, hunger and homelessness, and all those who have uttered needs in this life.

The most beautiful and touching part of this statement is that Jesus identifies himself with the needy person, the "least" of all. By serving those who have a special need, we are serving Jesus. But to be able to say it, he must be intimately united with these people. And showing such an intimate connection with them, Jesus reveals their infinite dignity as people.

This is such an important point to understand! Indeed, this has been a central theme in the constant teachings of St. John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI and in particular Pope Francis. An invitation to constantly focus on the dignity and value of the person must be the central message that we take from this passage.

Reflect today on the dignity of each individual person. Try to remind anyone you may not be able to look with perfect respect. Who do you look down at and roll your eyes? Who do you judge or disdain? It is within this person, more than any other, that Jesus awaits you. Wait to meet you and be loved by the weak and the sinner. Reflect on their dignity. Identify the person who best fits this description in your life and commit to love and serve it. Because in them you will love and serve our Lord.

Dear Lord, I understand and believe that you are present, in hidden form, in the weakest of the weak, in the poorest of the poor and in the sinner among us. Help me to look for you diligently in every person I meet, especially those who need it most. While I find you, may I love you and serve you with all my heart. Jesus I believe in you.
