The prayer to Mary on May 1st

The Angelus is a prayer in memory of the mystery of the Incarnation.

The name derives from the initial word of the Latin text, Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariae.

This devotion is recited three times a day, at 6 in the morning, at noon and at 6 in the evening.

The institution of the Angelus is attributed by some to Pope Urban II, by others to Pope John XXII.

The triple performance is due to Louis XI of France, who in 1472 ordered it to be recited three times a day.

Every Sunday at noon the Pope gives a short speech at the end of which the Angelus recites.

From Easter to Pentecost the Regina Coeli is recited instead of the Angelus,

a devotion that recalls the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
