The story of the Madonna del Pettoruto

The history of the Madonna del Pettoruto of San Sosti dates back to fifteenth century. According to legend, a shepherd was grazing his sheep near a rock called "Petra Rutifera” when he noticed a human figure at the top of the mountain. She approached and saw a statue of the Madonna with the Child in her arms.

Madonna and child

The shepherd wanted to bring the statue to the village, but when he lifted it he was unable to move it. So he decided to build one chapel on the mountain to keep the statue there. Curiously, at a certain point the statue goes down the slope by itself, leaving a trail still visible and goes to be placed inside the chapel where it is still today.

I scar the statue

The statue of the Madonna presents a scar under the eye. It is said that a knight, together with other brigands, approached the statue and allegedly slashed its face with a dagger. However, when the statue began to bleed, the brigands ran away and the knight who carried out the horrible act died an instant later right at the foot of the statue.

Il name of this Madonna is linked to a legend. Once upon a time it was said that infertile women, in order to become mothers through the intercession of the Madonna, had to bathe chest within the Roisa River. Hence the name Pettoruto.

The Madonna del Pettoruto is considered the patroness of San Sosti and his feast is a moment of great devotion and union among the faithful. The sanctuary is still today a place of prayer and peace, where many come to find comfort and hope.
