The devotions to be done for the Souls of Purgatory

There are three suffrage works, which can give relief to the souls of Purgatory and which have a wonderful effect on them:

Holy Mass: the loving power of Jesus who offers himself to lift souls.
Indulgences: the wealth of the Church, donated to the souls of Purgatory.
Prayer and good works: our strength.
The holy Mass

The Holy Mass is to be considered the best suffrage for the souls of Purgatory.

“Having the Mass celebrated for Christians, living or deceased, in particular those for whom we pray in a special way because they are so relieved of torment, will shorten their pains; moreover, at each Eucharistic celebration, more souls come out of Purgatory. With the Holy Mass, therefore, the priest and the faithful ask and obtain from God the grace for the souls of Purgatory, but not only: the special benefit belongs to the soul for whom the Mass is celebrated, but of its general fruit is the the whole Church to enjoy it. In fact, in the community celebration of the Eucharist, while asking for and obtaining the refreshment of the souls of the faithful and the remission of sins, it increases, strengthens and reawakens its unity, a visible sign of the invisible "Communion of Saints".

In fact, not only the members who are still on earth, but also those who are already in the glory of Heaven, as well as those who are atone for their sins in Purgatory, join the offering of Christ in the Eucharistic sacrifice. The Holy Mass is offered, therefore, also for the deceased who have died in Christ and are not yet fully purified, so that they can enter into the Light and Peace of Christ. "(From the Catechism of the Catholic Church nn. 1370-72)

The "Gregorian" Masses.

Among what can be offered to God in suffrage of the dead, St. Gregory exalts, in absolute, the Eucharistic Sacrifice: he is responsible for the introduction of the pious practice of the thirty masses, celebrated for thirty consecutive days, which he takes from Gregorian name.

Indulgences are a gift of God's mercy.

Recall that the plenary indulgence can be gained:

and from 1 to 8 November, visiting the cemetery [Indulgence applicable only to the dead!].

Apply the required conditions: Confession - Communion - Prayer for the Pope - Detachment from venial sin.

"The faithful who visit the cemetery and pray, even if only mentally for the deceased, can profit once a day, the plenary indulgence".

Prayer

Prayer is like a fresh dew that starts from our soul, rises to Heaven and, like healthy rain, falls on purging souls. Even a simple aspiration, an ejaculatory act, a short act of love for God, have an extraordinary efficacy of suffrage.

Among the prayers that we can do for the dead, those of the Church have more value and more efficacy; among these prayers the Office of the Dead stands out, the recitation of the De profundis and the Eternal Rest. Very effective prayer for the Indulgences that are attached to it and because it reminds us of the Passion of Jesus Christ is the Via Crucis. An extremely welcome prayer to the Lord and to the Blessed Virgin is the holy Rosary, to which are also attached precious indulgences and the Crown of One Hundred Requiem called for purgative souls.

Days of special prayers for the dead are the third, seventh and thirtieth since their passing away, and by popular pious custom, the Monday of each week and also the entire month of November, dedicated to the dead. To all these or other prayers, we must add holy Confession and Communion, and it is necessary that, on the occasion of the death of a loved one, relatives all confess and communicate for his soul.

There is no more beautiful testimony of caring affection for a deceased, than that of placing oneself in the grace of God or of increasing grace in one's soul with absolution, and receiving Jesus, making up for the deficiencies of the dead with love, and especially of those who were little practicing in life. Do not forget the good works and especially those in which the dear departed were deficient.
