Italy has the lowest number of virus deaths in over two weeks

Italy on Sunday reported the lowest daily death rate from the coronavirus novel in over two weeks and saw the number of ICU patients decline for the second day.

The 525 official Covid-19 deaths reported by the Italian civil protection service on Sunday have been the lowest since 427 were recorded on March 19.

Italy experienced the highest daily deaths of 969 on March 27.

"This is good news, but we shouldn't let our guard down," head of civil protection Angelo Borrelli told reporters.

The total number of people hospitalized throughout Italy also decreased by 61 for the first time (from 29.010 to 28.949 in one day).

This is accompanied by another positive figure: it is the second daily reduction in the number of ICU beds in use.

The number of new cases confirmed in Italy increased by 2.972, which represents a 3,3 percent increase compared to Saturday's data, but this is still half of the number of new cases reported on March 20.

The Italian civil protection agency added that 21.815 people had so far recovered from the coronavirus in the country.
