Introduction

The clock of the Passion is a devotion that intends to remember what Jesus lived on the last day of earthly existence: from the institution of the Eucharist to the various stages of his passion, death and resurrection. It developed in the 14th century in the fervor of contemplation of the passion and death of Jesus.

The Dominican Henrico Suso, in his dialogue between the disciple and Wisdom, highlights the need to remember at every moment of this priceless treasure which is the Passion of Jesus which continues mystically in his limbs. In the Passionist family this devotion has been much cultivated because it is a suitable means to support our attentive memory of the passion of Jesus: the most wonderful work of divine love.

St. Paul of the Cross exhorted the religious so that in the solitude of the retreats, at any time of the day, they should be mindful of the particular vow that holds them united to the Crucified Christ, who, with his open arms, wants to gather all the people.

"May we all have at heart: the conversion of sinners, the sanctification of one's neighbor, the liberation of the souls in purgatory and therefore often offer God the Passion, Death and Precious Blood of Jesus and do this with commitment, being proper to our Institute" ( S. Paolo della Croce, Guide n.323)

M. Maddalena Frescobaldi animated the Ancille to pay all their attention, all the study and all their delight in the meditation of the Passion of Jesus. "If they have in mind the passion and death of our Redeemer, nothing can succeed troublesome and disgusting; indeed, among the same troubles and anguish that they usually meet, the meditation of their crucified bridegroom will produce for them the beautiful fruits of internal peace and joyfulness "(Instructions 1811, 33)
