Osmogenesis the charisma of Padre Pio and the mystery of its perfumes

Osmogenesis is a charism possessed by some Saints. This charisma, in certain circumstances, allowed them to perceive particular perfumes from a distance or to those close to them.
These perfumes are called smells of holiness. Padre Pio was in possession of this charisma and such phenomena were so frequent for him that ordinary people were used to defining them as the perfumes of Padre Pio.
Often the perfume emanated from his person, from the objects he touched, from his clothes. Other times the scent was perceptible in the places where it passed.

One day a well-known doctor had removed a bandage from the wound on the side of Padre Pio which had been used to dab the blood and had closed it in a case to take it to his laboratory in Rome, to analyze it. During the trip, an officer and other people who were with him said they felt the perfume that usually emanated from Padre Pio. None of those people knew that the doctor had the bandage soaked in Father's blood in his bag. The doctor kept that cloth in his office, and the strange perfume permeated the environment for a long time, so much so that the patients who went for visits asked for explanations.

Fra Modestino said: “Once I was on vacation in San Giovanni Rotondo. In the morning I went to the sacristy to serve Mass to Padre Pio, but there were already others who were disputing this privilege. Padre Pio interrupted that soft shouting saying - he only needs Mass - and pointed to me. Nobody spoke any more, I accompanied the Father to the altar of San Francesco and, having closed the gate, I began to serve Holy Mass in absolute recollection. At the "Sanctus" I had a sudden desire to feel the indescribable perfume that I had already perceived many times in kissing the hand of Padre Pio. The wish was immediately fulfilled. A wave of so much perfume enveloped me. It increased more and more until it took my breath away. I held my hand to the balustrade so as not to fall. I was about to pass out and mentally asked Padre Pio to avoid a bad figure in front of people. At that precise moment the perfume disappeared. In the evening, while I was accompanying her to the cell, I asked Padre Pio for explanations on the phenomenon. He replied: "My son, it is not me. It is the lord who acts. It makes it feel when it wants and to whom it wants. Everything happens if and how He likes it. "

I was behind the door of the confessional from which I saw Padre Pio confessing from the other door - said a lady. While I was thinking inside me that I was about to speak to a saint, I was flooded with a fortefiore.gif (2499 byte) perfume of lilies. This impressed me greatly because I had never believed in the history of perfumes. And so I convinced myself that the perfumes of Padre Pio really existed.

A 24-year-old lady from Bologna had fractured her right arm which, three years earlier, had been operated on following a serious accident. After a new operation followed by a long and painful treatment, the surgeon declared to the girl's father that she would never resume the use of the arm, completely ankylosed following the removal of a section of the scapula, having failed, unfortunately, unfortunately bone graft. Desolate, father and daughter, leave for San Giovanni Rotondo. Padre Pio receives them, blesses them and declares: “Above all, no despair! Trust in the Lord! The arm will heal. It is the end of July 1930. The patient returns to Bologna without the slightest improvement. Padre Pio was therefore wrong! You don't think about it anymore and the months go by. On September 17, the day of the stigmata of St. Francis, suddenly the apartment in which the family lived is invaded by a delicious smell of jonquils and roses. This lasts about a quarter of an hour, to the amazement of the roommates who seek in vain the origin of those scents. From that day on, the young woman resumed the use of her arm. An x-ray, which she jealously kept, showed the refurbishment of the bone and cartilage.
