Madonna of tears of Syracuse: original video of tearing ... what does science think?

What does science think?
A medical commission, commissioned by the Curia of Syracuse, went to the Iannuso house on 1 September: about a cubic centimeter of the liquid that gushed out from the eyes of the Madonnina was taken; subjected to analysis, the liquid was classified as "human tears".

On Sunday 30 August a cineamatore from Syracuse, Nicola Guarino, had managed to film a tear, documenting the phenomenon in about three hundred frames. Other amateur films documenting the tearing are kept at the Episcopal curia of Syracuse, and were shown in the Mixer program of 2 May 1994 (RAI, G. Minoli), within a precise reconstruction of the events.

Luigi Garlaschelli, member of CICAP, has repeatedly reproduced the miracle of tearing by soaking a statue of porous material in a saline liquid. Some holes at eye level were drilled at the statue, later glazed, where the liquid with which it was soaked could escape giving the effect of tearing. Recovered an exact copy of the statue of Syracuse made by the same manufacturer in the same period, Garlaschelli pointed out that it is precisely of enameled plaster, with a cavity behind the head.

However, it is noteworthy how the commission at the time of the events had dismantled the effigy to verify the presence of foreign elements to the statue and in the official report acknowledged that: “It is to be noted that the examination with magnifying glasses of the internal corners of the eyes did not detect any pore or irregularity of the enamel surface ". The report was signed by doctors Michele Cassola, Francesco Cotzia, Leopoldo La Rosa and Mario Marietta. The manufacturer of the object expressed himself in the same sense.

Dr. Michele Cassola, avowedly an atheist, in charge of scientifically assessing its reliability, never denied the evidence of tearing, following which he converted into a point of death.

The Episcopate of Sicily, presided over by Cardinal Ernesto Ruffini, on 13 December 1953 declared tearing miraculous.
