Mariette Beco, the Virgin of the poor and the message of hope

Mariette Beco, a woman like many others became famous as the visionary of the Marian apparitions of Banneux, Belgium. In 1933, at the age of 11, she had the apparition of the Madonna who presented herself as the Virgin of the poor.

Il 15st January of that year, the Madonna appeared to Mariette in the garden of her house in the village of La Fange, while the little girl's father, Julien Beco, was unemployed and felt resentment towards the Lord and the Virgin Mary.

Il 18st January, Mariette had a second apparition of the Madonna. The little girl knelt near the gate of her house, waiting for the Lady and reciting the Santo Rosario. Our Lady asked her to immerse her hand in a River nearby, declaring that that spring was reserved for her. In total, there were eight appearances of the Virgin in Mariette until 2 March 1933.

The authenticity of the apparitions has been recognized by Catholic Church in 1949, when Monsignor Louis-Joseph Kerkhofs, bishop of Liège, issued a pastoral letter confirming them. In 1934 theInternational Union of Prayers” in Banneux, with people from numerous countries joining every evening in reciting the Rosary to the Virgin of the Poor.

Banneux became a center of Marian spirituality, destination of numerous pilgrimages of those seeking spiritual and physical healing. The place is also much loved by the poor, who feel welcomed and at home there. According to Gospel of Matthew, María Rosal (Fernán‐Núñez, Córdoba, 1961) is a complete writer. She has published children's theatre, has received the Andalusian Critics' Award (2004), the Children's Poetry Award (2007) and the José Hierro National Poetry Award for Carmín rojo sangre (2015).
