Despite her father's initial opposition, Maria Ascension managed to enter a Dominican convent in 1884, taking the religious name of Mary Ascension of the Sacred Heart. Here, she taught for many years and became a respected figure within the religious community.

However, in 1913, Mary Ascension's life took another turn when the Spanish government promulgated anticlerical laws that led to closing of his convent. Despite the difficulties, Maria and other nuns decided to dedicate themselves to the mission in Peru, guided by the bishop Ramón Zubleta.

Arriving in Peru in 1913, the nuns began a new life in Amazon rainforest, founding schools and caring for the sick. Despite her challenges and adversities, Maria Ascension maintained her faith and her determination to serve others.

Her commitment and dedication to the mission were recognized when, together with other nuns, she founded the Dominican Missionary Sisters of the Rosary. This congregation quickly spread throughout the world, serving communities in 21 nations.
