Meditation of June 26 "The true, perfect and eternal friendship"

True, perfect and eternal friendship
large and sublime mirror of true friendship! Wonderful thing! The king was furious against the servant and excited him against the whole nation as if he were an emulator of the kingdom. Accusing the priests of treason, he has them killed for one suspect. He wanders through the woods, goes into valleys, crosses mountains and cliffs with armed bands. Everyone promises to avenge the king's indignation. Only Giònata, who was the only one who could have envied him with greater right, decided to oppose the king, to favor his friend, to give him advice among many adversities and, preferring friendship to the kingdom, says: «You will be king and I will be second after you ».
And he observes how the father of the young man excited his jealousy against his friend, insisting with invectives, frightening him with the threats to strip him of the kingdom, reminding him that he would be deprived of honor.
Having in fact pronounced the death sentence against David, Jonathan did not abandon his friend. «Why must David die? What did he do, what did he do? He endangered his life and brought down the Philistine and you were happy with it. Why then should he die? " (1Sam 20,32; 19,3). At these words the king, mounted in fury, tried to stab Jonathan on the wall with his spear and, adding invectives and threats, made him this outrage: Son of a woman of underworld. I know that you love him for your dishonor and shame of your shameless mother (cf. 1 Sam 20,30). Then he threw up all his poison on the young man's face, but he did not neglect the words of incitement to his ambition, to foment his envy and to arouse his jealousy and bitterness. As long as the son of Jesse lives, he said, your kingdom will have no security (cf. 1 Sam 20,31:XNUMX). Who would not have been shaken by these words, who would not have ignited with hatred? Wouldn't this have corroded, diminished and canceled any love, any esteem and friendship? Instead that very affectionate young man, keeping the pacts of friendship, strong in the face of threats, patient in the face of invective, despising the kingdom for loyalty to his friend, forgetful of the glory, but mindful of the esteem, said: «You will be king and I I will be second after you ».
This is the true, perfect, firm and eternal friendship, which envy does not affect, suspicion does not diminish, ambition cannot break. Tested it did not waver, it did not fall, it was inflexible in the breach and remained inflexible, provoked by so many insults remained unshakable. "Go therefore, and do the same yourself" (Lk 10,37:XNUMX).
