Today's Meditation: The Baptism of Jesus

In Baptism Christ becomes light, we too enter into his splendor; Christ receives baptism, let us sink with him in order to rise to glory with him.
John gives the baptism, Jesus approaches him, perhaps to sanctify the one from whom he is baptized in the water, but also certainly to bury the old man totally in the waters. Sanctify the Jordan before sanctifying us and sanctify it for us. And since it was spirit and flesh sanctifies in the Spirit and in the water.
The Baptist does not accept the request, but Jesus insists.
It is I who must receive baptism from you (cf. Mt 3:14), so says the lamp in the sun, the voice to the Word, the friend to the Bridegroom, the one who is the greatest of the woman born to him who he is the firstborn of every creature, the one who in the mother's womb jumped with joy to the one who, still hidden in the womb, received his adoration, the one who was ahead and who would have gone ahead, to the one who had already appeared and would have appeared again in its time.
"I must be baptized by you," and add, "in your name." He knew that he would receive the baptism of martyrdom or that, like Peter, he would be washed not only on the feet.
Jesus rises from the waters and carries the whole cosmos up high. He sees the skies split and open, those skies that Adam had closed for himself and for all his descendants, those foreclosed and barred skies like heaven was for the flamed sword »
And the Spirit testifies to the divinity of Christ: he presents himself symbolically over the One who is completely equal to him. A voice comes from the depths of the skies, from those same depths from which Who at that moment received the testimony came.
The Spirit appears visibly as a dove and, in this way, it also honors the deified body and therefore God. It should not be forgotten that long ago a dove had also been the one who had heralded the end of the flood.
Let us therefore honor the baptism of Christ on this day, and celebrate how this feast is right.
Purify yourself totally and progress in this purity. God rejoices in so little as much as in man's conversion and salvation. For man, in fact, all the divine words were pronounced and for him the mysteries of revelation were fulfilled.
Everything has been done so that you become as many suns, that is, life force for other men. Be perfect lights before that immense light. You will be inundated with its supernatural splendor. The light of the Trinity will reach you, very clear and direct, of which so far you have received only one ray, coming from the one God, through Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom glory and power go down through the ages. Amen.
