Medjugorje: how to make fasting bread

Sister Emmanuel: HOW TO MAKE FASTING BREAD
Recipe used in Medjugorje

For a kilo of flour put in the following order: 3/4 of a liter of tepid water (about 370C), a coffee spoon of sugar, a coffee spoon of freeze-dried yeast (or baker's yeast), mix well then add: 2 tablespoons of oil, 1 tablespoon of salt, a bowl of rolled oats or other grains (one bowl holds 1/4 pint). Mix everything. You can add a little flour if the dough is too liquid.

Leave the dough to rest for at least 2 hours (or overnight) in a well-heated place at a constant temperature (no less than 250°C). You can cover it with a wet cloth. Put the dough with a maximum thickness of 4 cm. tall, in well-oiled moulds. Leave to rest for about 30 minutes. Place in the preheated oven at 160°C and cook for 50 or 60 minutes.

The quality of bread largely depends on the type of flour used. You can mix wholemeal flour with white flour.

On fasting days it is important to drink plenty of hot or cold liquids.

The Gospa did not give details, so everyone can decide freely how to fast according to their heart and also their health.

There are many who have abandoned the practice of fasting due to the poor quality of the bread. Commercial bread is sometimes made with denatured flour and is not really nourishing. In Medjugorje families make their own bread and it is excellent.

Fasting on this bread is not a problem.

Making your own bread is good from all points of view. It allows you to better enter the spirit of fasting. It is a beautiful opportunity to concretely meditate on Jesus' words on the seed of wheat that fell to the ground, on the wheat and the tares, on the leaven that a woman puts into 3 measures of flour and of course 10 splendid gospels of the Bread of Life.

In a very simple way we also approach Mary as a Jewish woman, careful to do her work under the gaze of God and to keep Shalom, peace, at home. Who better than her can prepare us for the Eucharist and help us to live the Bread of Life as she herself received it on earth, after the Ascension of her son? Fasting is easier when, the day before, you ask God for this grace, because fasting well is a grace that should not be taken for granted. We ask our Father for this day's bread, we also humbly ask Him to be able to fast on bread and water. Fasting willingly increases the power of fasting against the forces of evil, divisions and wars.
