SAINTS PETER AND PAUL, APOSTLES - SOLEMNITY (MASS OF THE DAY)
Liturgical Color Red
Antiphon
These are the holy apostles in earthly life
they fertilized the Church with their blood:
they drank the cup of the Lord,
and they became friends of God.

Collection
O God, who gladden your Church
with the solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul,
make your Church always follow the teaching of the apostles
from which he received the first announcement of the faith.
For our Lord Jesus Christ ...

First Reading
Now I really know that the Lord tore me from Herod's hand.
From the Acts of the Apostles
Acts 12,1: 11-XNUMX

At that time, King Herod began to persecute some members of the Church. He had James the brother of John killed by the sword. Seeing that this was pleasing to the Jews, he also had Peter arrested. Those were the days of the unleavened bread. He had him captured and thrown into prison, handing him over to four stakes of four soldiers each, with the intention of making him appear before the people after Easter.

While Peter was therefore kept in prison, a prayer for him incessantly rose from the Church. On that night, when Herod was about to make him appear before the people, Peter, guarded by two soldiers and tied with two chains, was sleeping, while the sentries guarded the prison before the doors.

And behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him, and a light shone in the cell. He touched Peter's side, woke him up and said, "Get up quickly!" And the chains fell from his hands. The angel said to him, "Put on your belt and put on your sandals." And so he did. The angel said, "Put on your cloak and follow me!" Peter went out and followed him, but he did not realize that what was happening was the reality of the angel: he believed he had a vision instead.

They passed the first and second guard posts and arrived at the iron gate that leads into the city; the door opened by itself in front of them. They went out, walked a road and suddenly the angel left him.

Then Peter, inside himself, said: "Now I really know that the Lord has sent his angel and has torn me from the hand of Herod and from all that the people of the Jews expected."

God's word

Responsorial Psalm
From Psalm 33 (34)
R. The Lord has freed me from all fear.
I will bless the Lord at all times,
his praise always on my mouth.
I glory in the Lord:
the poor listen and rejoice. R.

Magnify the Lord with me,
let's celebrate his name together.
I looked for the Lord: he answered me
and from all my fears he freed me. R.

Look at him and you will be radiant,
your faces will not have to blush.
This poor man cries and the Lord listens to him,
it saves him from all his anxieties. R.

The angel of the Lord encamps
around those who fear him, and free them.
Taste and see how good the Lord is;
blessed is the man who takes refuge in him. R.

Second reading
Now all I have left is the crown of justice.
From the second letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to Timòteo
2 Timothy 4,6: 8.17-18-XNUMX

My son, I am already about to be poured into the offer and the time has come for me to leave this life. I fought the good fight, I finished the race, I kept the faith.

Now I have only the crown of justice that the Lord, the just judge, will give me on that day; not only to me, but also to all those who have looked forward to its manifestation with love.

The Lord, however, was close to me and gave me strength, so that I could complete the proclamation of the Gospel and all the people would listen to it: and thus I was freed from the lion's mouth.

The Lord will free me from all evil and bring me to safety in heaven, in his kingdom; glory to him forever and ever. Amen.

God's word
Gospel acclamation
Hallelujah, hallelujah.

You are Pietro and on this stone
I will build my church
and the powers of the underworld will not prevail over it. (Mt 16,8)

Hallelujah.

Gospel
You are Peter, I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven.
From the Gospel according to Matthew
Mt 16,13-19

At that time, Jesus, arriving in the region of Cesarèa di Filippo, asked his disciples: «Who do people say that the Son of man is?». They replied: "Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, others Jeremiah or some of the prophets."

He said to them, "But who do you say I am?" Simon Peter replied: "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

And Jesus said to him: «Blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah, because neither flesh nor blood have revealed it to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I say to you: you are Peter and on this stone I will build my Church and the powers of the underworld will not prevail over it. To you I will give the keys of the kingdom of heaven: everything you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and everything you untie on earth will be melted in heaven. "
