Mystery in Notre Dame, candles remain lit even after the fire

La Notre Dame Cathedral, one of the oldest temples in the France, caught fire on April 16, 2019. The disaster destroyed part of the roof and the tower of Viollet-le-Duc. However, not even the flames, dust, debris and jets of water thrown by the firefighters have been able to put out the candles lit in the Church.

Secondo Aleteia, one of the people who helped remove the works of art that were inside the cathedral on the day of the tragedy, said that the candles that were close to the Virgen del Pilar were still burning.

Confused, the man asked a firefighter if anyone had passed the site and lit candles but was denied because the site was closed for access due to debris.

“I was fascinated by those burning candles. I could not understand how the fragile flames had resisted the collapse of the vault, the jets of water that spilled for several hours and the impressive blow emitted by the fall of the tower - the source told Aleteia - They [the firefighters ] have been affected as much as I am ”.

The rector of the cathedral, Monsignor Chauvet, confirmed that the candles were lit but not at the foot of the Virgin del Pilar, but near the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament. Even the glass frame that protects the sanctuary of Santa Genoveva has remained intact. “There was a lot of rubble around the reliquary. The slightest slip of material against the glass wall would shatter it. Yet the reliquary was immaculate ”.
