Christmas 2021 falls on a Saturday, when do we have to go to Mass?

This year the Christmas it falls on a Saturday and the faithful are asking themselves some questions. What about Christmas and weekend Mass? Since the holiday falls on a Saturday, are Catholics obliged to attend Mass twice?

The answer is yes: Catholics are required to attend Mass both on Christmas Day, Saturday 25 December, and the following day, Sunday 26 December.

Every obligation must be fulfilled. Hence, a Mass on Christmas afternoon will not fulfill both obligations.

Any obligation can be fulfilled by participating in a Mass celebrated in a Catholic rite on the same day or night of the previous day.

The obligation of the Christmas Mass can be fulfilled by participating in any Eucharistic celebration on the night of Christmas Eve or at any time on Christmas Day.

And the obligation of Sunday within the octave of Christmas can be fulfilled by attending any Mass on the night of Christmas day or on Sunday itself.

Some of you may already be thinking about New Year's weekend. Do the same obligations apply?

No. Saturday 1 January is the solemnity of Mary but this year is not a sacred day of obligation. However, the Masses will, however, be celebrated in observance of the solemnity.

In 2022, however, Christmas Day and New Year's Day will fall on a Sunday.
