Natuzza Evolo and the angels

Natuzza angel

When dealing with the themes of angelology, one cannot fail to mention a significant case, that of Natuzza Evolo (1924 - 2009), a mystic from Paravati, in the province of Catanzaro. Since 1939 she has shown sweats of blood, with the appearance of sores, especially on Holy Wednesday, Holy Thursday and Good Friday. These phenomena, kept hidden until 1965, then became known to many thousands of people. Various potentialities are attributed to Natuzza: from bilocation to apparent death, from trance to dialogue with the dead, from exorcism to angelic singing. Various testimonies of the latter are offered:

Natuzza fell into catalepsy, and suddenly we heard a distant, indescribable sound, such a melodious music, like a chorus of ten, twenty intertwined voices. I was very impressed: it was like an angelic song far far away, it didn't seem to come from Natuzza's mouth.

At that time I heard the angelic song from Natuzza in trance. This song was heard by many people of Paravati, sometimes, exceptionally, it was heard by the children of Natuzza, while she was not in a trance but completely awake, coming in this case not from her, but from the outside. Natuzza downplayed it, saying that the singing came from the radio. (Marinelli 1983: 47)

Unlike similar phenomenologies, not uncommon in southern Italy (and not only), the story of Evolo has continued over time without many doubts arose on the veracity of its claims and on the singularity of the events that accompanied it during the its long existence. Its stability over time has aroused surprise even in very rigorous scholars who are not inclined to give credit to supernatural facts.
The fact is that numerous witnesses report unusual situations related to the figure of Natuzza.

An extraordinary charisma possessed by Natuzza is the continuous vision of his guardian angel and that of the people with whom he comes into contact. Her guardian angel, seen by her since childhood, guides her, admonishes her, assists her in her conversion work, gives her particular advice. It is his guardian angel but more often the visitors' guardian angel who suggests to Natuzza the answer or the advice to give, so Natuzza candidly asserts, that's why his answers are usually infallible, and they penetrate in people's hearts, because they are suggested by the Angels, creatures of intelligence and knowledge superior to that of man. (Marinelli 1983: 83-84)

This other information is useful:

Natuzza sees the Angels in the form of beautiful children with their feet raised from the ground, from the apparent age of 8-10 years, to the right of lay people, and to the left of the priests. He sees them move their lips and feels, coming from their lips, the answers to give to the people with whom they are in conversation. The guardian angels of the priests accompany them giving them the right, says Natuzza, because they recognize in them the representative of their and our Lord Jesus Christ, while the spirit of the lay people gives the right to the Angel, a superior creature on the spiritual scale. (Marinelli 1983: 84)

Such an explanation is fully part of a popular conception of the figure of the priest as a divine envoy, endowed with particular powers. A sort of hierarchy is therefore established which sees ordinary people at the initial level, then the angels and a little higher the priests.
After all, Evolo herself seems to further justify such a point of view in that “she has always been very determined in affirming and supporting that the angels she saw, most often called by her 'the little angels', for their semblance of children, they are real creatures, completely independent and different from both living and dead people, created by God directly in the angelic state and never passed through human nature "(Marinelli 1983: 84). It is hardly necessary to note that also in this regard, the idea that Natuzza communicates in relation to the angels fits perfectly into the current tradition of his belonging culture: after all his little angels-children do not differ much, in the external forms, from those that they are the protagonists of the "sermons" to Jesus in the rites of the nearby city Verbicaro.
Again according to Natuzza Evolo "the Guardian Angels assist men not only throughout their lives, but also in Purgatory, until they enter Paradise" (Marinelli 1983: 131).
It seems that the woman of Paravati, nicknamed "the saint", had a particular familiarity with the angels, whose existence has amply demonstrated their veracity.

Another time, while Natuzza was in conversation with his visitors, a priest, in the chapel room, made irony with the people present on the woman's ability to speak with the angels. Natuzza, warned by her angel, came out the door, addressing him with a warning sentence in Latin. The priest was confused, but then, when he entered Natuzza, he scolded her for being called back by her in public. This episode was personally told to me by Natuzza; I remember his spontaneity with which he said to me: “That priest did not believe that there is an angel, and instead there is, there is! And then he scolded me for the warning in Latin, but none of those present had understood what I had said! " (Marinelli 1983: 86).

Paravati's mysticism has always affirmed that the depth of her answers and advice came not from her own abilities but from being in contact with the angels of God. Mrs. Luciana Paparatti of Rosarno declares:

Some time ago my uncle Livio, the pharmacist, was doing a cure for cholesterol. One day, going to Natuzza, I took Aunt Pina, Uncle Livio's wife, with me. When we were received, the aunt said to her: "I came for my husband, I would like to know if the medicines are right, if we have entrusted ourselves to a good doctor ...". Natuzza interrupted her, saying, “Madam, you are worrying too much about it. There is only a little cholesterol! ". My aunt turned all red and Natuzza, as if to apologize, said to her: "The little angel is telling me!". Her aunt didn't tell her about cholesterol, she only asked if the therapy was right and the doctor was good. "

Professor Valerio Marinelli, university professor of engineering, recognized by all as the greatest biographer of the Calabrian mysticism declares:

On numerous occasions I have personally seen how Natuzza, after asking himself a question, wait a few moments before answering, often fixing his gaze not on the person who speaks to him, but on a point close to it, but above all I have found out how really she is capable of immediately giving enlightening answers on complex and difficult questions on which those who interrogate her often know nothing, and to whom it would be difficult to answer even after long reflections. Natuzza immediately centers the problem and suggests its solution, when there is a solution; many times I was able to verify, sometimes not immediately but after a more or less long interval of time, as she was really right and had responded very well. This speed of judgment on problems of which you objectively do not possess, from the human point of view, the elements of judgment, the acuity, the intelligence, the conciseness and simplicity of your answers, are, in my opinion, entirely exceptional and superhuman, so much so that I believe they can constitute a valid proof of his real ability to talk with angels, pure spirits to whom the Doctors of the Church have always attracted superior intelligence, power and holiness.

Finally, it must be said that Natuzza herself expressed herself this way: “Yes, it is true, Our Lady often appears to me. I also see my guardian angel and the spirits of the dead. I see them as if they were still inhabitants of this world. They talk to me, smile at me, are dressed like us. Sometimes I just can't distinguish the living from the dead. For fifty years I have had such phenomena, but I still cannot give them an explanation "(Boggio, Lombardi Satriani 2006: 288). And then he adds: “I am nothing, I am only a poor woman who repeats what the angel says. When a person comes to ask me for advice on a problem, I look at my guardian angel. If he speaks, I report; if he is silent, I cannot say anything because I am ignorant "(Boggio, Lombardi Satriani 2006: 289). And again: “The guardian angel. I see it continuously. He is the one who suggests what I have to tell people. He looks like a boy of about eight years old, he is blond, with curly hair. It is always surrounded by a very strong light. Even at this moment I see the angel. It is here, on my right. It is so bright that it makes my eyes water "(Boggio, Lombardi Satriani 2006: 292).
Many other episodes - many of which are probably unknown to us - could be added but what remains clear is the deep relationship that Natuzza had with the celestial spirits, which she used extensively to help the many people who wanted to meet her to seek comfort from she.
