In the communion of Saints the importance of indulgences

"It is divinely revealed doctrine that sins involve penalties inflicted by the holiness and justice of God, to be discounted both on earth, with the pains, miseries, and calamities of this life and especially with death, and in the afterlife, [ in Purgatory], even with fire and torments or with purifying pains. … ”[PART Ia N. 2]

“It is to be considered that all wandering men on earth every day commit at least light sins; so that everyone needs God's mercy to be freed from the penal consequences of sins. ... "[PART Ia N. 3]

"The Only Begotten Son of God, in fact, has procured a treasure for the militant Church - It is known that the merits of the Blessed Mother of God and of all the elect constitute a further increase in this treasure - and entrusted it to Blessed Peter , clavigero of heaven and his successors, his vicars on earth, so that they would deliver him salutarily to the faithful and, for reasonable causes, mercifully apply him to those who had repented and had confessed their sins, sometimes totally forgetting [plenary indulgence ], and some others in a partial way [partial indulgence], the temporal punishment due for sins ”. [Part Ia N. 7]

"This remission of temporal punishment due for sins, already remitted with regard to guilt [with Confession], with proper term has been called" indulgence ".

The Church .. with an authoritative intervention, dispenses the faithful, duly disposed, with the treasure of the satisfactions of Christ and the Saints in order to remit the temporal punishment.

The goal ... is not only to help the faithful to pay the penalties of sin, but also to encourage them to do works of piety, penance and charity, especially those that help increase faith and the common good ". [Part Ia N. 8]

§ 1. Those who are baptized, not excommunicated, in a state of grace at least at the end of the prescribed works are capable of gaining indulgences.
§ 2. To effectively gain indulgences, the capable subject [the faithful] must have at least the intention of purchasing them and fulfilling the works ordered in the established time and in the due manner, under the terms of the concession. [CDC CAN. 996]

"Indulgence is partial or plenary according to the fact that it partially or totally frees the temporal punishment due for sins". [CDC CAN. 993]

"Every member of the faithful can make money for himself or apply partial and plenary indulgences to the deceased." [CDC CAN. 994]
