Today we pray to St. John Duns Scotus, the Saint of November 8th

Today, Monday 8 November 2021, the Church commemorates St. John Duns Scotus.

Born around 1265 in Duns, near Berwickin Scotia (hence the nickname of Scotus, meaning 'Scottish'), John entered the Franciscan Order around 1280 and was ordained a priest in 1291 by the bishop of Lincoln.

Great teacher of theology, defined as a "thinker of the future" by the German philosopher Martin Heidegger, Duns Scotus is comparable to Tommaso d'Aquino and St. Bonaventure.

Its goal is to achieve one new synthesis between philosophy and theologiansto; convinced of the primacy of love over knowledge, he presents theology as a practical science, a science that leads to love.

Nicknamed "doctor subtilis" for the acuteness of his wits and "doctor Marianus" for his devotion to the Virgin whose Immaculate Conception he will support, he will be brought to the honor of the altars only in recent times, on March 20, 1993.

PRAYER TO JOHN DUNS SCOTO

O Father, source of all wisdom,
that in Blessed John Duns Scotus, priest,
supporter of the Immaculate Virgin,
you have given us a teacher of life and thought
do that, enlightened by his example
and nourished by his doctrine,
we adhere faithfully to Christ.
He is God and he lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
for all ages.
Amen
