Padre Pio and the miracle of multiplied bread
Padre Pio born Francesco Forgione was an Italian Franciscan friar known for his spiritual gifts and sanctified life. During his life, Padre Pio witnessed numerous miracles, including the so-called "miracle of bread multiplied".
The miracle of multiplied bread took place during the Second World War, when the city of San Giovanni Rotondo, where Padre Pio lived, was hit by famines and severe lack of food. Padre Pio decided to help the people of his community and asked his friars to provide him with bread and milk to distribute to the needy.
One day Padre Pio asked his brother who was in charge of the refectory to bring bread and milk, but his brother replied that they only had bread for themselves and that there was not enough for everyone. Padre Pio then ordered him to bring it to him anyway, saying that he would prayed to multiply.
Padre Pio multiplies bread and feeds the needy
The brother brought what was requested and Padre Pio said a prayer, he blessed food and distributed it to the needy. Surprisingly, milk and bread multiplied so that all could be fed and satisfied. The brother was amazed and from that moment on, he no longer doubted Padre Pio's ability to perform miracles.
The news of the miracle spread quickly and attracted the attention of many people, both believers and non-believers. The friar however, did not seek fame or recognition for his miracles, he only wanted to help people in need and bring comfort and hope to those who were suffering.
The miracle of the bread multiplied is just one of the many episodes that bear witness to the holiness of Padre Pio. During his lifetime he witnessed many other miracles, including healing the incurably sick and bilocation, or the ability to be in 2 places at the same time.
