Can a Catholic get married to a person of another religion?

Can a Catholic marry a man or woman of another religion? The answer is yes and the name given to this mode is mixed marriage.

This happens when two Christians get married, one of whom has been baptized into the Catholic Church and the other is linked to a church that is not in full communion with the Catholic one.

The Church regulates the preparation, celebration and subsequent accompaniment of these marriages, as established by Code of Canon Law (cann. 1124-1128), and offers guidelines also in the current one Directory for Ecumenism (Num. 143-160) to ensure the dignity of marriage and the stability of a Christian family.

To celebrate a mixed marriage, the permission expressed by the competent authorities, or the bishop, is required.

For a mixed marriage to have effective validity, there must be three conditions established by the Code of Canon Law which are listed under number 1125.

1 - that the Catholic party declares its willingness to avoid any danger of alienation from the faith, and sincerely promises that it will do everything possible so that all children are baptized and educated in the Catholic Church;
2- that the other contracting party is informed in due time of the promises that the Catholic party must make, so that it appears genuinely aware of the promise and obligation of the Catholic party;
3 - that both parties are instructed on the essential purposes and properties of marriage, which cannot be excluded by either of them.

Already in relation to the pastoral aspect, the Directory for Ecumenism points out about mixed marriages in art. 146 that “these couples, despite having their own difficulties, present numerous elements that should be valued and developed, both for their intrinsic value and for the contribution they can make to the ecumenical movement. This is especially true when both spouses are faithful to their religious commitment. Common baptism and the dynamism of grace provide the spouses in these marriages with the foundation and motivation that lead them to express their unity in the sphere of moral and spiritual values ”.
