Reflect today on how deep your determination to overcome sin is

“When an unclean spirit comes out of someone, it wanders through arid regions in search of rest but, finding none, it says: 'I will return to my home where I came from.' But upon returning, he finds it swept away and tidied up. Then he goes and brings back seven other spirits more wicked than him who move and live there, and the last condition of that man is worse than the first. " Luke 11: 24-26

This passage reveals the danger of habitual sin. Perhaps you have found that you have struggled with a particular sin in your life. This sin has been committed over and over again. Eventually you decide to confess it and get over it. After confessing it, you are very happy, but you find that in one day you immediately return to the same sin.

This common struggle that people face can cause a lot of frustration. The Scripture above speaks of this struggle from a spiritual standpoint, the standpoint of demonic temptation. When we target a sin to overcome and turn away from the temptation of the evil one, the demons come towards us with even greater force and do not give up the battle for our souls so easily. As a result, some eventually give in to sin and choose not to try to overcome it again. It would be a mistake.

A key spiritual principle to understand from this passage is that the more attached we are to a particular sin, the deeper our determination to overcome it must be. And overcoming sin can be very painful and difficult. Overcoming sin requires a deep spiritual purification and complete submission of our mind and will to God. Without this resolute and purifying surrender, the temptations we face from the evil one will be very difficult to overcome.

Reflect today on how profound your determination to overcome sin is. When temptations arise, are you wholeheartedly committed to overcoming them? Try to deepen your determination so that the temptations of the evil one do not get you.

Lord, I surrender my life into your hands without reservation. Please strengthen me in the time of temptation and keep me free from sin. Jesus I believe in you.
