Reflect today on the person or persons you need to forgive the most

Lord, if my brother sins against me, how many times do I have to forgive him? Up to seven times? "Jesus replied," I tell you, not seven times but seventy-seven times. " Matthew 18: 21-22

This question, posed by Peter to Jesus, was posed in such a way that Peter thought he was generous enough in his forgiveness. But to his great surprise, Jesus increases Peter's generosity in forgiveness exponentially.

For many of us, this sounds good in theory. It is inspiring and encouraging to meditate on the depths of forgiveness we are called to offer to another. But when it comes to daily practice, this can be much more difficult to accept.

By calling us to forgive not just seven times but seventy-seven times, Jesus is telling us that there is no limit to the depth and breadth of mercy and forgiveness we must offer to another. Without limits!

This spiritual truth must become much more than a theory or ideal for which we aspire. It must become a practical reality that we embrace with all our strength. We must try daily to get rid of any tendency we have, no matter how small, to hold a grudge and remain angry. We must try to free ourselves from all forms of bitterness and allow mercy to heal all pain.

Reflect today on the person or persons you need to forgive the most. Forgiveness may not immediately make sense to you, and you may find that your feelings are out of line with the choice you are trying to make. Do not give up! Keep choosing to forgive, no matter how you feel or how hard it is. In the end, mercy and forgiveness will always triumph, heal and give you the peace of Christ.

Lord, give me a heart of true mercy and forgiveness. Help me let go of all the bitterness and pain I feel. In place of these, give me true love and help me offer that love to others without reserve. I love you, dear Lord. Help me love all people as you love them. Jesus I believe in you.
