Reflect today on your desire for wealth

“'Fool, this night your life will be required of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong? So it will be for those who accumulate treasures for themselves, but are not rich in what matters to God “. Luke 12: 20-21

This passage is God's answer to those who decide to make worldly wealth their goal. In this parable, the rich man had such a bountiful harvest that he decided to demolish his old granaries and build larger ones to store the harvest. This man did not realize that his life would soon end and that everything he had accumulated would never be used by him.

The contrast in this parable is between the abundance of earthly wealth and wealth in what matters to God. Sure, it might be possible to be rich in both, but doing so would be quite difficult.

A simple challenge of this gospel is to eliminate the desire for material wealth. This is difficult to do. It's not that material wealth is evil, it's just that it's a serious temptation. The temptation is to rely on material things for satisfaction rather than trusting God alone. Material wealth should be understood as a real temptation that must be kept in check.

Reflect today on your desire for wealth. Let this gospel offer you a simple challenge regarding your desire for wealth. Be honest and look into your heart. Do you spend a lot of time thinking about money and material possessions? Seek God above all things and let Him be your satisfaction.

Lord, I want to be truly rich in grace and mercy rather than material things. Help me to always maintain the right priorities in life and to be purified in all my desires. Jesus I believe in you.
